In accordance with Prison Rule [R.865 (a), (b), (c)], the Committee for the Welfare of Prisoners (CWP) is dedicated to improving the welfare, education, health, rehabilitation, and livelihood of juvenile prisoners, women prisoners, and children living with their mothers in prisons across Sindh.

As part of its ongoing commitment to rehabilitation and psychosocial well-being, CWP launched a Group Art Therapy initiative in the Women’s Prison Karachi with a small-scale research grant from Interactive Research and Development (IRD) Pakistan. Implemented between December 2023 and July 2024, this innovative program aimed to enhance the mental health and emotional resilience of women inmates while evaluating the effectiveness of art-based therapeutic interventions in a prison setting.

Over the course of the project, 20 structured sessions were conducted under the supervision of a trained psychologist, engaging 13 women prisoners once a week. Through creative expression and guided reflection, participants experienced improved mental well-being, reduced stress, and strengthened emotional coping skills.

This initiative marks an important step toward integrating evidence-based mental health support within the prison system, aligning with CWP’s broader mission of holistic rehabilitation and human dignity for all prisoners.
