Gymnasium

In a prisons conditions survey conducted by CWP-LAO in 2018, it became clear that imprisoned women have significantly poor health facilities in comparison with the general population and insufficient access to physical exercise. With the concept of rehabilitation of prisoners, ensuring their health is an important part of a prison. The former Special Assistant of Chief Minister Sindh on Women Development, Ms. Irum Khalid, in March 2018 committed to opening a gymnasium in the Women’s Prison Karachi. The CWP-LAO with the support of Women Development Department and collaboration with Sindh Prison’s Department worked to realise this commitment and has now set up a gymnasium in Women’s Prison Karachi as a pilot project.

LAO has established a first of its kind Gymnasium setup for women inmates at the Women Prison, Karachi on June, 2018. Gym classes are being held twice a week under the guidance of a professional instructor with participants receiving professional coaching and learning on physical skills. This also helps to reduce their mental stress and other kinds of traumas through physical exercise.
